Leaves of yesterday

I wander in the quiet night with my trusted companion
Solitude, she is with me again
We discourse on matters perplexing my rabid mind
The quest for my core that yields not
For we look back together and smile in unison
As joy of years past lends us a fresh whiff
We look ahead and merely raise our eyebrows
The road onward is dark and laden with imagined bumps
Trees on either side lean in somber prostration
Before the first step, we picture their branches touching us
The little leaves and stems caress the shoulder
They hurt less than we had imagined them to
Such scars they leave in my soul today
When I look back at their instructive touch
If only I had been more exploratory and reached out

The fruits would have been mine still
